    Geomorphological Evolution and Vulnerability of Low- Lying Coasts in Bangladesh: The Case Study of Sandwip Island

    Bangladesh is ranked as the “5th most at-risk country” in the world in terms of disasters with a world risk index of 20.22% in the World Risk Report 2012. Coast and island flooding induced by extreme storms and cyclones born in the Northern Indian Ocean passing through the funnel shaped shallow northern Bay of Bengal are the most dangerous natural hazards in the area. Additionally, remarkable geomorphological change of the lower GBM active delta and relative Sea Level Rise (SLR) have drawn special attention to the environmental scientists and respective managers for the alarming more intense and more frequent upcoming climate change vulnerabilities.The Lower Meghna River Estuary (LMRE) is an extremely dynamic estuarine system with dramatic geomorphological changes of the offshore islands. The erosion and accretion rates are remarkably high and the islands are reducing their original sizes. As populations flock to the coast and offshore islands at threat from erosions, storm inundation and sea level rise, intensive studies must be carried out on the vulnerability of these coastal regions. Sandwip Island, located at the confluence of the Lower Meghna River Estuary, shaped and characterized by both tidal actions of the Bay of Bengal and river streams of the Meghna, was chosen as the only international case study site outside Europe in the framework of the Risc-KIT FP7 European project (http://www.risckit.eu/). The project aims to develop tools and methods to reduce risk and increase resilience of coastal areas. The toolkit will be implemented for each case study. The present works aims to describe the state of the art of knowledge on the island covering geomorphology, sediment characteristics, hydrodynamics and socioeconomics. Community perceptions and indigenous coping strategies aspects of the island are included in a coastal vulnerability perspective to be useful in further research, development of effective preparedness, management and actions plan. To reach this goal, an attempt was taken to find out the answers to the following questions: 1) what is the status of geomorphological changes? 2) What are the sediment characteristics of the erosion-accretion prone shorelines? 3) What is the status of the sea level rise relative to the island 4) What is the total vulnerability/hazard ranking by local perceptions? 5) How much has the land use changed due to erosion and associated hazards ? and finally 6) What strategic changes should be taken? The research questions were answered using topographic surveys, lab based sediment analysis, tide gauge data analysis, erosion-accretion mapping and development of high resolution DEM and TIN using Remote Sensing and GIS-based tools and techniques and questionnaire survey results interpreted with national disaster management plans. The study found that the island is more physically prone to coastal erosion, coupling with storm surges and sea level rise making it more vulnerable in future. The erosion rate considering both shoreline and area changes is much more intense exceeding accretion in the silty clay sedimentary parts and the sea level rise trend is alarming in comparison with other nearby coastal areas in Bangladesh.Tidal data analysis for Sandwip shows semi-diurnal components higher in amplitude than Chittagong. Diurnal amplitudes are comparable and phases are generally higher for Sandwip with a 47 minute delay than Chittagong. The DEM demands more intensive bathymetric information that should be used for more accurate hydrometeorological models for the low elevated island, where as the island is almost flat with the average topography is only 5 meter above MSL and the north-western part is slightly higher than the south-western part as observed in the TIN justified by Topographic survey. The physical assets have been declining stressing on the socioeconomy of the community as found by the social survey as well as land use satellite mapping. So, a relatively high earthen embankment encircling the island, a crossdam connecting north side of the island to mainland is immediately needed to protect the community from erosion as well as relative sea level rise and storm surge inundation hazards. A site specific hydrometeorological warning should be developed and announcement dissemination should be maintained in the local language. Development of roads and transportation system and the health training should be enhanced to make people more aware and adaptive with the associate disasters

    Recreational fishing trips constitute a significant part of the tourism business in many countries. Linking fisheries to tourism can be both a response to the need to create innovative tourism products and the need to find new sources of income for fisheries to make them more profitable and sustainable. This leads to the question of whether Bangladesh can be developed as a Fisheries-Based Ecotourism (FbE) destination. Though several types of research have been done concerning the prospects of ecotourism in Bangladesh, the feasibility of FbE specifically remains under-studied. Based on a literature review and stakeholder interviews, this study explores the concept of FbE in a Bangladeshi context and its potential impacts on socio-economic community life as well as on the environment. This paper makes the case that the diversified topography of Bangladesh—including the riverine flat alluvial plains, hills and valleys, deciduous and evergreen forests, lakes, seashores, and beaches—is ripe with potential for FbE development. With its focus on the prospects and challenges of FbE development in Bangladesh, this paper could provide a useful reference point for future discourse on these sorts of cultural and economic strategies.Peer reviewe

A combination of primary (quantitative and qualitative) and secondary (literature databases) data sources were used in this study. It applied a social–ecological system (SES) and social–ecological resilience (SER) concept to collect quantitative and qualitative data (120 in-depth individual interviews, four focus group discussions, and strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats-SWOT analyses) and frame their interpretation. The study found that Bangladesh needs to adopt a firm policy to utilize tourism’s potential in national economic development and societal progress. The findings show the considerable potential of the concept that integrates business, education, and an environmental conservation perspective in Bangladesh, specifically for Saint Martin’s Island: 32% of interviewees expressed that increasing employment opportunities and the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) is the primary potential, whereas 31% said it would attract fishing tourists and 23% believed it would develop the local infrastructure and facilities for fishing and tourism. Similarly, most of the respondents (31%) thought that the lack of awareness and promotional activities is the main limitation preventing this initiative from being well accepted. Moreover, based on the findings, specific measures for strengthening the social–ecological resilience of the coastal fishers via FbE at the local level were suggested, including building communal links, developing community infrastructures, revising prevailing rules and regulations, offering alternative means of generating income for fishers during disaster periods, and more active sharing of responsibility between stakeholders and government for the management of FbE. Finally, with its focus on the prospects and challenges of coastal FbE development on Saint Martin’s Island, this article provides a useful reference point for future discourse on similar social and economic strategies. While this study focuses on Bangladesh’s coastal fishing villages, the results are possibly applicable more broadly in similar contexts and developing countries worldwide

    Impacts, Diversity, and Resilience of a Coastal Water Small-Scale Fisheries Nexus during COVID-19: A Case Study in Bangladesh

    The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected many world regions’ coastal social-ecological systems (SESs). Its extensive consequences have exposed flaws in numerous facets of society, including small-scale coastal fisheries in developing countries. To this extent, by focusing on two coastal districts in Bangladesh, namely Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, we investigated how the lockdown during COVID-19 impacted small-scale coastal fishers in Bangladesh and which immediate measures are required to develop and implement insights, on the role of the scale of governance attributes, in facilitating or impeding the resilience of small-scale fisheries (SSFs). We analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data obtained through semi-structured, in-depth individual interviews (n = 120). Data were further validated using two focus group discussions in the study areas. The impact of the pandemic on the fishers’ livelihood included halting all kinds of fishing activities; limited time or area for fishing; livelihood relocation or alternative work; low fish price; fewer fish buyers, causing difficulty in selling; and travel or free-movement restrictions. Additionally, the study discovered several coping skills and found that the most prevalent coping strategy against the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was to take out loans (48%) from different organizations and NGOs and borrow money from relatives, neighbors, friends, or boat owners. Finally, the current research analysis identified possible recommendations to enhance the resilience of coastal fishers during COVID-19, emphasizing arrangements that should be made to provide alternative livelihood opportunities for coastal fishermen via need-based training, technical and vocational education and training, and microcredit to keep them afloat and earning during the pandemic, not relying only on fishing

    Stock Assessment and Rebuilding of Two Major Shrimp Fisheries (Penaeus monodon and Metapenaeus monoceros) from the Industrial Fishing Zone of Bangladesh

    The two economically important shrimp species in Bangladesh are the tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, and the brown shrimp, Metapenaeus monoceros. However, a continuous decline in the landing of these species from the industrial trawling made it critical to assess their stock biomass status to explore their response to the present degree of removal. Given the minimum data requirement and robustness, this study employed the depletion-based stock reduction analysis (DB-SRA) to assess these fisheries rigorously. For the industrial fishing zone (beyond the 40 m depth in the EEZ of Bangladesh), the estimated historic mean carrying capacity (K) was 5015 metric tons for the Penaeus monodon and 35,871 metric tons for Metapenaeus monoceros. The estimated overfishing limits (OFL), which were much smaller than the reported catches throughout the time series, indicate the overfishing status of these fisheries. As a result, the estimated biomass for the reference year (B2020) for both species was lower than BMSY, indicating that these fisheries are not producing MSY. Therefore, for the rebuilding and sustainable management of these stocks, this study recommended a catch limit of 100 metric tons for P. monodon and 750 metric tons for M. monoceros for the next ten years from biomass projections

    Sustainable Utilization of Fishery Waste in Bangladesh—A Qualitative Study for a Circular Bioeconomy Initiative

    Living marine resources are limited; therefore, utilizing them sustainably is essential. Not all resources obtained from the sea are used adequately, causing discards, on-board waste, and by-products and waste on land. Recognition of the limited marine resources and increasing environmental pollution has emphasized the need for better utilization of by-products. Waste may include particles of flesh, skin, bones, entrails, shells or liquid stick water. Unfortunately, no fishery waste and by-product management initiatives or projects exist in Bangladesh; by-products are generally thrown into dustbins, ponds, rivers, and the sea. Bangladesh’s fish-processing waste and fishery by-products could be exported, providing a source of foreign currency earnings. Primary and secondary data were collected through documentary analysis, a literature review, and in-depth interviews (n = 129) with fishers and other relevant stakeholders regarding the challenges of Bangladesh’s sustainable fishery by-products and fish-processing waste. The data were analyzed thematically, guided by the most meaningful stories, and show that fish waste, or fishery by-products, should not be considered less valuable than the fish itself but is a precious and profitable resource capable of bringing health, social, economic, and environmental benefits. Our results reveal that fishery waste can expand local communities’, especially fishers’ and other workers’, potential for jobs or alternative income-generating tasks during fishing ban seasons.
